The picture is a trimmed version of the original and has been referred to a photographic evidence of the Rape of Nanking but it is a mistake. The original version has the Japanese caption which says 鉄嶺ニテ銃殺セル馬賊ノ首 (heads of mounted bandits〈馬賊〉 shot in Tieling). That is to say, the victims are not the citizen of Nanking but bandits of Tieling. The perpeturator is unknown.
